Non-Lethal Weapons Training
At Security Officer Training Institute, we train security officers with the procedures, techniques, and tactics necessary to manage, reduce, and recognize aggressive and violent behavior through non-lethal and alternative control methods.
We offer basic knowledge and clear instruction on non-lethal weapons policy, employment, characteristics, and their applications in an array of military operations.
Examples of non-lethal weapons
While some non-lethal weapons are developed to control humans, others are made to control vehicles. Here are some of those weapons:
Human control
- X26 taser:This device has a range of up to 35 feet and sends a strong charge of electricity into the person.
- Modular crowd control munition:While this is designed like a claymore mine, it sends out approximately 600 hard rubber balls.
- Acoustic devices:These devices can either be used as a loudspeaker for crowd control or can be used to send different sound waves. To deter divers, there’s also an underwater version.
- Oleoresin capsicum dispensers:It’s somewhat similar to tear gas and irritates the throat, nose, and eyes.
- Grenades: Different types of grenades can be used, including NICO BTV-1 flash bang, M-84 flash bang, and sting ball.
- 12 gauge rounds:Often, three types of non-lethal 12 gauge shotgun rounds are employed that comprise sting-ball, sock, and fin stabilized.
Vehicle control
- Spike strips:They’re used to flatten the tires of vehicles.
- Lightweight arresting net:These are designed to stop a vehicle moving at 30 mph. By wrapping around the front end, the net punctures and locks up a vehicle’s front drive.
- Caltrops: Built to puncture vehicle tires, they’re a 4-pronged piece of sharpened steel that can flatten a tire.
While these are some of the most commonly used non-lethal devices, tests are being done on many more.
